If you want to teach English abroad, taking the EBC Trinity CertTESOL course is the perfect way to make it happen. In this article, we showcase four of our graduates, who are now making their own waves in the TEFL world and teaching English abroad. Read on to find out where they ended up. And who knows…you could be next!
Teach English abroad: Helga’s journey (Spain and Colombia)
Helga, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, is one of our Road2Spain graduates. Under the Road2Spain program, she took the Trinity CertTESOL course, and studied the Spanish language with a Spanish language school in Madrid. The course gave her a lot of insights into the world of TEFL as well as helped her discover things about herself.
Having worked as a copywriter and a travel writer with a background in advertising, one day she decided that she wantedalso wanted official TESOL certification. This is what got her interested in moving to Spain. The Road2Spain programme allowed her to learn Spanish at a Cervantes Institute-accredited language school in Spain while teaching English with her Trinity CertTESOL certification. After the programme, she decided to move to Colombia, where she continues to teach English and embrace her role as a cultural ambassador at American School Way.
Teach English abroad: Helga’s Road2Spain experience
In a recent graduate check-in interview, Helga was kind enough to share with us how the Trinity CertTESOL course helped her achieve success in the TEFL world. She also shared that the Road2Spain programme offered her exactly what she wanted.
“Truly, it was the entire package that EBC offered,” she said. “And while a lot of the packages sound similar, after talking with the team at EBC and also getting in touch with the Spanish language institution, which I used as well…that combination is what sold me. Because I did want to study Spanish. It was a big factor. It wasn’t just the Trinity CertTESOL, but the Trinity CertTESOL along with Spanish.”
She also spoke of the strong EBC graduate support system as well as its job placement programme, saying she appreciates them. Helga even mentioned that Tita Ashton, the owner and CEO of EBC is very supportive and helpful even to this day. “If I have questions, I can email her and she helps and she answers my questions,” Helga said. “You know, it doesn’t matter if I am in school or (a graduate of) EBC now. It’s like a support system. A lifetime support system.”
Teach English abroad: Tyler (South Korea — EPIK Programme)
Tyler, who is from the United States, took the EBC CertTESOL course in July 2022. In less than a year after she finished her course, she was off to teach English abroad. Her destination? South Korea, where she is teaching in the EPIK programme.
In a graduate interview with EBC, Tyler shared how the interest in teaching English abroad came about, and why she chose to get Trinity CertTESOL certification with EBC.
“I decided to take the Trinity CertTESOL course because I always wanted to teach abroad,” she told us. “And I really never knew how to do that until I found out that teaching English is one of the best ways to do it. So, that’s why I decided to get certified. I wanted to get my certification from EBC because it was compatible with my schedule in the USA. It’s also a very well-recommended course. That’s why I chose to do it–so I can be able to do what I truly want to do.”
Teach English abroad: Tyler in South Korea
Tyler also shared that moving to South Korea has been a dream of hers since she was a child. “I went to Taiwan when I was younger and I loved working in the schools,” she said. “I loved being with the kids. And then, I went to Japan and I absolutely loved it and I was like, ‘Yeah, this is where I want to be.’
For some reason, I just loved East Asia. So, I chose to teach English in Korea – because it’s a new place. I was looking at going to Singapore (and) the Philippines… cause I thought that’d be really fun too…but so far, South Korea is where I really felt like was the right place for me.”
To Tyler, it was simple. She knew what she wanted, so she went for it. “I always knew my whole entire life that I wanted to teach in another country,” she said. “For me, I was like…this is what I feel like I was made for…so I knew my whole life I was going to go do it. So, when I found out the correct route to go, I took that step. I had many failures. I would try this one thing to go, and it didn’t work out. (Then), I would try another thing, and it didn’t work out.
Then when I found–like, okay–teach English. Trinity’s a good course. I’m going to take that. And I made it through that. (Then), I applied for the next thing I was going to do and I got that. And now, I’m going. So like, it’s something I always knew that I wanted to do my whole life. And honestly, if I wasn’t doing it, I don’t know what I’d be doing…so that’s why I chose to do it. “
Teach English abroad: Rondell (Japan — JET Programme)
Rondell, who is also from Trinidad and Tobagos, is also one of our many graduates who are making waves in the international TEFL world. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in theatre arts with a double minor in psychology, he went after his dream to teach English abroad. His destination? Japan.
Teach English abroad: Rondell in the JET programme
In a graduate interview with EBC, he shared how the Trinity certTESOL course helped him get into the highly competitive JET programme.
“As you mentioned, it is a super competitive programme,” he said. “Lots of people are applying, so anything that can give you an edge–you kind of want to take that opportunity to give yourself a better shot at getting into the programme.
So while I was at EBC, I was in the middle of applying for the JET programme, and Tita was really, really helpful with providing me with information. She even provided me with a recommendation letter that I was able to give to my embassy. As I mentioned, I was in the middle of the training, so I hadn’t finished the course yet. So I didn’t actually have the certificate to say ‘Oh, I have the certificate along with my name.’
But they were able to give me this provisional letter saying that this is when I’m expected to complete the programme, and that was such a big help showing that I was in the programme taking the course, getting experience to be able to do the job that I was going to be doing on JET. So EBC was a big support during the application process.”
Teach English abroad: Amir (Iran and the UK)
One of our most recent EBC Trinity CertTESOL graduates, Amir, is from Iran. His degree in psychology, as well as his interest in the language acquisition process played a significant role in his decision to pursue the EBC Trinity CertTESOL course. Not to mention, he is multilingual.
In a recent graduate interview with EBC, he shared how his decision to pursue his studies in neuroscience in the UK came together with his interest in teaching English abroad. “I was looking through job websites,” he shared with us. “And I found out that teaching English in London–in the UK, is a good job. So I looked through the opportunities and all of them want international degrees such as TESOL. So I asked my previous teachers who had that experience.”
Amir also told us about the lack of such courses in Iran. “As you know, in Iran, we do not have this kind of course because of the sanctions and this kind of thing,” he said. “We have to take the course online or in countries near us, such as Turkey, Emirates and these kinds of countries. I looked through the Trinity website and I chose EBC because of the time and the comments that I have received. I actually searched through the net and found some good comments.”
Teach English abroad: Amir’s Trinity CertTESOL experience
Though he had previous experience with other teacher training courses, he told us that “they weren’t (very) practical. They were theoretical–they taught you lots of things, but you did not have enough time to practise them.”
He compared such courses with the EBC Trinity CertTESOL course, saying, “But this course is amazing because of the practical training. You have to teach two classes every week, and you receive lots of feedback from your classmates and from your trainers.”
Furthermore, when asked if he would recommend the course and why, Amir shared that he would. “As I said before, there were so many practical experiences,” he shared. “There was so much useful and constructive feedback. And also we have (access to a) permanent worldwide job placement programme.”
Amir is already set to teach English in Iran before he moves to England to pursue his studies and teach English.
